Senior Scientist, Lead Downstream Process Development

The Challenge
You will be responsible for the development of scale-up and scale-down methods and models to provide predictive process parameters for manufacturing scale and cost analysis. You will spend 60% of your time in the laboratories and be supported by initially one Technician. The team is expected to grow as the company matures and you have the ambition and potential to become Team Leader.
The position requires interactions with several disciplines and partners, including analytical chemistry, strain engineering, and external partners such as CMO’s and collaboration partner companies. You are expected to communicate on all levels and like to be involved with both commercial and science people.
Technology transfers and CMO support may be required during some periods, so you also enjoy 20% traveling.
Areas of responsibility:
- Perform downstream processing (DSP) experimentation at lab scale to support commercially scalable process definition and development
- Analyze and interpret data to develop models for predictive performance and cost
- Conduct DSP process development at bench and pilot scale, transfer processes to commercial scale, and support initial commercial scale production
- Conduct process and/or equipment testing at CRO/CMO and equipment vendor facilities
- Manage technology transfer between Biosyntia and CRO/CMO (from lab scale to pilot scale to manufacturing scale)
- Support development of techno-economic analyses for new fermentation processes
- Prepare estimated CAPEX for equipment modifications, and generate capital and variable cost estimates for purification processes
- Analyze and present data to fellow scientists and external companies and partners

Your Talent
You have a MSc or PhD in Chemical Engineering or relevant field and + 5 years of relevant industry experience. The ideal candidate should have experience from bench scale, pre-pilot (10-30L), pilot (>1000L) and manufacturing scale (>10m3) and have hands-on experience with various unit operations.
The successful candidate will have the following profile:
- Experience with a range of commercially applicable unit operations such as cell isolation, extraction, liquid-liquid and liquid-solid separations, anion exchange, distillation, drying, filtration, crystallization, chromatography, etc.
- Demonstrated experience in developing DSP separation and purification processes for small molecules in fermentation broth
- Demonstrated experience in scaling processes from lab to pilot or plant scale, including performing on-site support
- Demonstrated experience in performing tech-transfer from/to CMO including writing the required reports
- Thorough knowledge of chemical engineering principles and familiarity with fermentation and biochemical processes
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills due to cross collaborative nature of the role
